Girls Groups Building Social Skills, Self-Esteem and Personal Growth
Tykes & Teens Registered Clinical Social Work Intern Johanna Kenworthy, MSW, has started 4th and 5th grade girls groups at Everglades Elementary focused on building social skills to increase their self-esteem and personal growth.
In this picture, the 4th grade girls used “self-esteem sunglasses” to change negative thoughts into positive ones. Changing “I can’t do anything right” to “I can do anything I want” and “I can do it!” And instead of “Why would they want to be my friend?” saying “I am a kind friend.” They began creating their own personal shields, identifying a personal mantra, goals in life and hobbies. They also created “My Month of Self-Regulation” Mandala color sheets and processed positive and negative “things” during the week.
