Calming Corners Provide Safe Space for Youth to Reflect

As part of our prevention programing, Tykes & Teens has introduced “Calming Corners” to 10 sites throughout St. Lucie County.
The Calming Corners provide a safe, comfortable, quiet space for youth to relax, reflect and self-regulate. It is a mindful space where youth can go to help them feel a sense of control, safety and peace.
The initiative is receiving accolades from after school program directors who are using the new spaces. Here’s a story from one of the YMCA programs.
“We have a child we know is going through some tough times right now at home. He is usually a child who is very helpful, happy and considerate of others. One day he seemed very irritated and kept pushing others away from him. One of the counselors approached him and asked if he wanted to escape from everyone for a little bit and just have his own space. He said yes and followed the counselor to the Calming Corner. He sat on the beanbag and grabbed one of the stuffed sports balls. It wasn’t long until he broke down crying and hyperventilating. The counselor gave him time to let it all out, and when he was calm, he began to share everything that was going on at home. After that, he felt much better and was ready to join the rest of the children again and went back to the happy, energetic child we all know. This also gave us an opportunity to talk to the boy’s mom about things happening at home and offer her some assistance as well. Our kids love the Calming Corner so much we are also going to start utilizing this space as a treat.”
