Mental Health in the News – Increase is female deaths by suicide among athletes and celebrities

Welcome to Tykes & Teens’ “Mental Health in the News” series where our experts provide perspective on mental health and wellness issues that are making headlines.
In today’s episode, Tykes & Teens’ Director of School Based Services Andrea Greenlee, LCSW, discusses the unprecedented number of deaths by suicide among athletes and celebrities.
Over the last six month, there have been five NCAA athletes, Miss USA and Noemi Judd, among others, who have died by suicide.
“We’re seeing a shift, especially in females, where individuals are not necessarily showing the typical signs of depression. Even though someone may appear to have a perfect world, you never know if someone is struggling,” says Andrea.
According to a recent U.S. Surgeon General report on mental health, youth depressive and anxiety symptoms have doubled during the pandemic, and in 2021, U.S. emergency department visits for suspected suicide attempts were 51% higher for adolescent girls. In Florida, suicide is the 3rd highest cause of death for ages 10-24.
What can you do?
“We don’t have clear cut signs like we used to, so it’s important to check-in with everybody,” adds Andrea. “It is important to reach out, have a conversation. Pledge to check-in with those you love and let them know you are there for them.”
If you or someone you know is struggling, call 211.
