Christopher was 13 years old when he started seeing a therapist at Tykes & Teens. He was struggling with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and autism spectrum disorder (ASD), having a hard time concentrating in school and had poor social skills.
Christopher was referred for counseling after he threatened to kill another student at school. He had also been blurting out in class, had difficulties concentrating in school and poor social skills. After starting therapy, we found that his threat and behaviors were due to bullying that Christopher had faced from the student he threatened and other peers who provoked him to say various things out loud at inappropriate times.
Through therapy, Christopher was able to process the incidents of bullying he’d faced and enhance his communication skills to better understand nonverbal cues from others, as well as respectfully respond to others when being addressed. In addition to individual behavioral therapy, Tykes & Teens’ social skills group helped Christopher to better interact with kids his own age and practice the skills he’d learned in individual therapy. Since beginning therapy at Tykes & Teens, Christopher has an increased sense of self-awareness and self-confidence, and has not experienced any further inappropriate outbursts.
