Alternative to Out of School Suspension (ALTOSS)

Home > Alternative to Out of School Suspension (ALTOSS)

The Alternative to Out of School Suspension Program (ALTOSS) is a free program open to Martin County middle and high school students who have been suspended from school. ALTOSS provides a safe, structured and educational experience for your child during their suspension. Our goal is to give you peace of mind while providing an opportunity for your child’s growth.

ALTOSS has been proven to be effective in decreasing repeat suspensions by using targeted activities to increase the student’s awareness of the importance of positive character, relationships, respect and cooperation. 70% of students who attend this program do not get resuspended.

Since 1999, we have helped families and adolescent students experiencing difficulties in school to gain the stability and strength to interact positively in their daily environment. This program helps students keep up with their school work while suspended and develop the skills to cope with their individual challenges.

Martin County School Districts will adjust student attendance to reflect attendance at ALTOSS rather than an Out of School Suspension, but please note that this is subject to change at the discretion of the school district.

Please call to confirm that your child will be attending as space is limited.

ALTOSS Programming

Education Instruction

A tutor is on-site daily and actively assists students with their school work, allowing them to maintain their academic standing.

Group Skills Building Sessions

Students participate in group sessions provided by our mental health professionals to identify the reason behind their suspension and develop alternative actions for the future in order to reduce the likelihood of a repeat suspension.

Group Activities

An activities specialist coordinates group activities designed to focus on social skills, teamwork, self-esteem and respect for self and the community.

Community Service Projects

Students learn to build a positive self-image, and gain respect for themself and others through service-based projects and giving back to their community. Under staff supervision, students spend a portion of each day becoming mentors and interacting with and helping younger students with their homework through the East Youth Initiative.
